MYP Aims
The aims of any MYP subject and of the personal project state in a general way what the teacher may expect to teach or do, and what the student may expect to experience or learn. In addition they suggest the ways in which the student may be changed by the learning experience.

The aims of the teaching and study of physical education are to encourage and enable the student to develop:

•    an appreciation and understanding of the value of physical education and its relationship to a healthy, balanced lifestyle
•    an interest in the promotion of health and wellness
•    the motivation to participate fully in all aspects of physical education
•    their optimal level of physical fitness
•    effective communication strategies, verbal, non-verbal and written
•    the skills and understanding necessary to participate successfully in a variety of physical activities, for example, learning, practicing, refining, adapting, thinking, interacting

•    an understanding of international perspectives on physical activity, sport and health education

Department Overview

Physical education is an opportunity for students to become physically active. There are a variety of activities conducted during the school year. They include; flag football, soccer, tennis, volleyball, basketball, badminton, bowling, miniature golf, just to name a few. Skills students learn include individual achievements and team work. The physical education department emphasizes fitness components on a daily basis which include flexibility, cardiovascular, muscular strength and endurance. It is important that we give students the knowledge and tools necessary to lead a healthy lifestyle. This life learned lifestyle can be carried throughout their adulthood and at home with their families.

Physical Education
Physical Education is an essential and basic part of a total education program. Through implementation of the National Standards in Physical Education, students will be provided with a variety of activities to help develop the skills, knowledge, and attitude necessary to lead a healthy lifestyle, as well as to function effectively in society.

Health
This course will require students to demonstrate understanding of the impact of nutrition, food selection, safety, and eating patterns on health. They will study the consequences of using tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs; the signs and symptoms of health problems that affect adolescents; sexual responsibility; how to prevent communicable diseases, HIV, and sexually transmitted disease/infections and pregnancy; and the basic structures and systems of the human body.

This course will offer students opportunities to explore career and education options so as to make informed decisions about future life choices
