WELCOME TO THE FACS DEPARTMENT!


This year this department will be intergrating FACS power standards, Middle Years Program (MYP), and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) into all of its courses.  This is being done to interwine skills and content knowledge so that students better understand Family and Consumer Science (FACS), prepare students for real world life skills, plus take on leadership roles.  Students are encouraged to think and work independently, as well as develop team cooperation skills.

MYP Aims and Goals For FACS
The courses in this department will help students prepare for success in the IB Middle Years Program (and the Personal Project) by cultivating minds.  Students will be introduced to the design cycle and will work with the concepts within the design cycle to teacher them how to create a product and/or solution.  Throughout the trimester, students learn using real world problems, simulation, journaling to help students become inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communications, principled, open minded, balanced, caring and reflective.

Students of FACS classes will be:

Holistic - the students will use other disciplines to help them understand the connections of how FACS applies to real world issues.  Technology, science and math will be heavily emphasized.

Inter-cultural - the students will examine a variety of cultural foods and customs, as it relates to nutrition, food preparation, child rearing practices and textiles.

Focused on communication - students will examine communication and technology as it relates to human relationships.


FACS I Class
In this class, students learn the basics of Family & Consumer Science.  They learn about self esteem, babysitting, various types of sewing, cooking, nutrition, plus safety and sanitation in the kitchen.

Units of Study
  1. Self Esteem Unit, the guiding question is "What makes a person who they are?"
  2. Baby Sitting Unit, the guiding question is "How do kids grow?"
  3. Sewing Unit, the guiding question is "How can I make something new from something old?"
  4. Cooking & Nutrition Unit, the guiding question is "Why do we eat what we eat?"

Multi-Cultural Foods Class
In this class, students learn and come to appreciate several different cultures and customs, in relation to food.  They'll learn about nutrition, vegetarianism, and cooking techniques through a world cultures lenses.

Units of Study

  1. Safety and Sanitation Unit, the guiding question is "What makes a kitchen safe?"
  2. The Food Lab Unit, the guiding question is "How does culture & climate affect what people eat?"
