Department Overview
A variety of English as a second language (ESL) programs are employed in schools, all with the same basic goal—to help beginning English language learners achieve rapid English proficiency. These programs differ widely in their approaches, varying in terms of instructional strategies, program structure, and amount of time students spend in classrooms with their native English-speaking peers. In ESL classes, English language learners receive instruction in English. The level of English used in class is tailored to the students’ proficiency (students are often grouped by proficiency level), and students in the classroom may or may not share the same native language.

ELL 3A: Language Development
Students will learn the application of rules of English grammar as they learn to write clearly written paragraphs, poems, short stories, and personal and business letters. Students will study class examples of literature, learn new vocabulary, and prepare for the Basic Skills Test in Reading.

ELL 3B: Content Language
Students will learn about American history from the perspective of the different people involved. They will be able to express an account of what happened in America’s early years through the Revolutionary War. In this course, students will summarize, ask questions, and write dialogues and diaries about historic people.

ELL 4A: Language Skills
Students will study grammar, fiction and nonfiction literature, story writing, and writer’s workshop procedures, using multiple reading strategies and identifying point of view, theme, and plot. Students will develop critical reading and research skills, practice active listening, and participate in discussions. Students will also work on writing clear five-paragraph essays in preparation for the 9th grade GRAD writing test.

ELL Read 180
ELL Read 180 is a reading program that focuses on skills and strategies to meet the ELL and MN Language Arts Standards in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. Read 180 begins and ends with whole-group instruction. In between whole-group meetings, students will break into three small groups that rotate among three different stations. Students will learn reading strategies to use with a broad range of fiction and nonfiction texts and respond orally and in written form. They will further develop academic writing skills by improving language mechanics and grammar usage. Students will use the writing process to write three-to-five-paragraph essays as well as pieces in other writing genres.
