Site Council Minutes
Site Council- March 3, 2008

Present- Pat Siverhus- vice-principal, Jan Gestner- staff, David Currie- staff, Dave Nystrom- parent, Kate Eisenthal- parent, Aaron Tiemann- staff and secretary.

a. Jan spoke about the culmination of History day.  After months of preparation history day commenced on the 21st of February.  A plethora of projects were judged and whittled down to a few finalists that will compete in the regional on March 21st.  David Currie said the dramatic category is much harder because of the subversive or implicit thesis; furthermore, he added that a steppingstone participant who did a dramatic project had an excellent performance.  The school needs parent volunteers to chaperone the regional because it is the same day as conferences for teachers.  The bus leaves from school and Kate Eisenthal suggested a letter home to the parents of the remaining participants.  One of the history teachers almost assuredly will have to go in spite of conferences.  Dave Nystrom will provide a list of potential parent chaperones.   Jan Gestner will be the contact person.

b. The Washington DC trip concluded on February 18th.  It was chaperoned by Jim Migely and Alicia Beaumaster.  They apparently said it was an excellent trip with no problems and all kids had a good time.

c. Website still needs help- Kate Eisenthal mentioned that it would be a good idea to have people other than teachers be responsible for collecting materials and keeping the site up to date.

d. Aaron Tiemann talked about the success of math team this year.  Math team took 3rd place at the Mathcounts regional in February and will send one student on to state and possibly the national meet.  That student being Max Timmons.  Mr. Tiemann and Mr. Courtney hope to continue the success of the math team next year.

e. The spelling bee was held at Highland and our school had two winners that will advance to regionals held at the history center on March 13th.  Again, we are in need of someone to chaperone the trip with Felix Meyer and Isabel Pfieffer- the winners- because of conferences.

f. Pat Siverhus explained about the incident on February 28.  It began in the morning when a report was made about a weapon in the school.  The student was not mainstreamed and the report initiated the emergency plan, which in this case was a soft lockdown, ie. school continued but with locked classroom doors.  The  student was arrested and the lockdown was stopped.  Student is in JDC now and a letter was sent home explaining the incident.  A staff meeting followed with a more detailed of the incident.  Luckily, the staff followed the procedures and no physical harm was caused to anyone.  It was suggested that in the future an announcement should be made over the intercom with explicit instructions; therefore, all teachers, including substitutes will know exactly what to do given the situation.  It was the first time the term soft lockdown was used and was not a well-known term and no one knew what it meant until they checked their e-mail.  It was suggested that police should have been informed about the protocol of the school and not the other way around, especially when we have a police liaison.

g. On Tuesday, February 26th, French Immersion students visited the school to go over scheduling and address concerns of parents and students.  The high school is now considering a “section” of French immersion.  Kate Eisenthal asked about numbers.  The answer was that the numbers will not be known, nor the budget, until first week of April.

h. Science museum good job award went to Ahmed Musse.  Nominated by Mr. Burfiend, Ahmed received a year-long membership to the science museum and attended a brunch at the museum on February 16th, 2008.

i. Discussed SCIP plan, especially what to do with homeroom.  What should it be used for and how should it be organized?

j. Parent conferences will again be held through homeroom, like in the fall.  Scheduling will be done by homerooms and students will have a script.

k. E-mail items for next meeting to Randy, most importantly will be the budget.  Next meeting will be April 7th, 2008.
