Promotion Requirements

® Students entering grades 7 and 8 during the 2006 - 2007 school year must pass a minimum of 80 percent of their required math and English credits and a minimum of 80 percent of credits in all other classes (excluding homeroom and advisory).
® Earning at least 80 percent of their middle/junior high school credits qualifies students for immediate promotion to high school after grade 8. Students who do not earn at least 80 percent of their middle/junior high school credits WILL NOT be eligible for immediate advancement to high school.

Highland Park Junior High School’s EXCEL program has a number of support services in place for students not making adequate progress toward meeting the requirements. These services include:

® Continuous in-school monitoring by EXCEL-provided staff
® Additional reading and math courses
® The creation and use of individual academic improvement plans (AIPs)
® Mandatory credit-bearing summer school sessions after grades 7 and 8
® Curricular and instructional support for students needing extra help in math and reading
® Mandatory enrollment in a supportive school success course
® Increased options for credit-bearing after-school courses

Students who do not meet the 80 percent middle/junior high school credit requirement by the September following their grade 8 year will be assigned to an alternative preparation program at an Area Learning Center site designed specifically to meet their academic needs and get them ready for grade 9. Students will move on to high school at appropriate times during the school year after they have demonstrated their learning by earning the required middle/junior high school credits.
