Reading in the Content Areas
Welcome to Reading in the Content Areas; a class designed to students become better readers in their content area classes (Science, History/Social Studies, Math and English).  Many students read quickly and successfully when they read books of their own choosing, for pleasure.  However, when given an informational textbook or other non-fiction text, they struggle to recall and retain what they have read.

This class, guided by the AMP Reading System, will teach strategies to make the reading and retaining of informational text a successful pursuit throughout the student's life.  The skills acquired in Reading in the Content Areas will lay a strong foundation for your student in 7th grade, 8th grade and beyond.

The strategies we will learn this year are:
  • Summarizing
  • Questioning
  • Predicting
  • Text Structure
  • Visualizing
  • Inferencing
  • Metacognition (which is a fancy word for doing all of the above)
