| Mr. O'Brien | | Welcome! I am Ian O'Brien. I have been teaching English, Creative Writing, and Journalism at Highland Park Junior High for three years. I have a B.A. in English from Cornell College and am currently completing a Masters in Teaching degree from Hamline University.
My path to teaching came by way of my love of writing. I learned to love writing in my junior high English classes, and that led me to write constantly throughout my high school and college career. Most of my writing is in the genre of realistic short fiction, though I also dabble in fantasy, horror and philosophical fiction. In addition to fiction I do journalistic writing, which includes published articles in the Twin Cities Green Guide.
I strive to inject my love of the written word into everything I do as a teacher. I see my job as a responsibility to not only teach my students to become better readers and writers, but to instill in them a love of books and creative expression through writing.
My classes are always a balance of lecture, individual projects, small group activities and large group discussions. My intent is to keep English class interesting, fun, and active, and to reach students of as many different ability levels and learning styles as possible.
