| Mr. Dickhausen's page | | Welcome to my corner of the Highland Park Junior High web page. My name is Dale Dickhausen, and the 2009-10 school-year is my 26th year at Highland Park. During my teaching career I have taught classes in Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, Environmental Science, Biology, Mastery Science, ESL Math, Basic Standards Math, and vocabulary instruction in the Minority Encouragement Program. I still love to teach. When I first started teaching, I taped into my briefcase the following motto: “I am educating the children who must carry this country into the future. I must do my best.” Twenty six years later that very same, handwritten motto is still in my briefcase, but, even more so, now it is in my heart. I grew up in Saint Paul, in the Daytons Bluff area on the lower Eastside. After graduating from Hill High School in 1967, I enlisted in the United States Navy. Upon completion of thirteen months of basic electronics training and guided missile school I was assigned as a Third Class Missile Technician to the FBM submarine, USS George C. Marshall SSBN 654. I qualified in submarines, earning my Silver Dolphins in August of 1969. During my time in the USN I earned my patrol pin & stars by completing ten Polaris / Poseidon deterrent patrols aboard the Marshall. Before my discharge from the Navy in 1977, I was Weapons Department First Class Leading Petty Officer in charge of the missile compartment and all missile compartment personnel. In Feb. 1978, while in the Navy Reserves,I passed the Missile Technician Chief’s exam. In 1979, I transferred to the U.S. Army Infantry Reserves out of Walker, Minnesota. During that time I completed the training and testing necessary to serve with a U.S. Army radiological team and a State of Minnesota radiological team. I also completed the Civil Defense Preparedness course from Staff College, Battle Creek, Michigan. In 1982, I earned an Associate Degree, graduating from Inver Hills Community College with “Outstanding Academic Achievement.” In 1984, I earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree (majoring in biology and geology), and a teaching certificate, graduating “Cum Laude” from Macalester College in Saint Paul. Other courses completed include: master electrician course, locksmithing, small engine repair, appliance repair, and the Dale Carnegie course on Effective Speaking and Human Relations. My professional experience includes: science chair at Highland for eight years; building steward for three years; co-chair of staff development committee for five years; served on the principal's advisory board for six years; team teacher in the Highland Park Mastery Program for three years; Project Common Ground teacher for two years, peer coaching mentor for three years, Highland Park liaison to Macalester College for three years, Jason Project teacher for four years, Timber Wolf Program teacher for three years, co-operating teacher for the design and layout of the early 1990’s science room remolding project, and co-operating teacher for the design of Highland Park’s 2002 science addition. This is what I bring to the Highland Park Jr. High table: I am a team player. I have a ready aptitude for developing mutual respect with co-workers and peers. I am able to deal with difficult people in a professional manner. I am decisive, fair, energetic, and supportive. I am a positive individual. I have lots of experience to draw from. I have a good sense of humor. I am a self starter and willing to try new teaching strategies. I am a firm believer in positive reinforcement. I communicate well with children. I am a life-long learner. And, very importantly, I have the experience of raising three daughters and four sons. Lastly, with the school district’s approval, I was supervising teacher for my granddaughter’s 3rd grade home-schooling experience during the 2002 – 2003 school year. I personally wrote all of her daily lessons for science, social studies, music, and introduction to German. I also insured that she had appropriate lessons for math, English, art, and Bible education. When I’m not teaching I like to fish, read, write, do carpentry, ride my motorcycle, listen to music, and play with my grandkids. Also, I am currently completing a series of astronomy and particle physics lectures produced by the Teaching Company. Some of my favorite characters include Peter Pan, Robin Hood, Zorro, Davy Crockett, Sir Perceval, Indiana Jones, Nikola Tesla, Buzz Lightyear ("To infinity & beyond!), Jacques de Molay, BB King, Holden Caulfield (from Catcher in the Rye), the Purple Hippo, and Zacharias.
