All seventh and eighth grade students participate in the National Geographic Bee in their Social Studies class. Classroom Geography Bees will take place December 10-14th. The top two winners from each Social Studies class participate in the final competition.

The school level Geography Bee will be held Wednesday, December 19th during Homeroom. During the final competition, the field of students is narrowed down to two students who then participate in the championship round. The winner of the championship round is the school champion.

The school champion will then take a written test to qualify for the state competition which is usually held at Macalester College at the beginning of April. In each of the 50 states and territories, the National Geographic Society invites the students with the top 100 scores to compete at the state level. The state winner receives $100 and is invited to participate in the national competition. The national competition is held at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C. Transportation and accommodations for the trip are provided. The national winner receives a $25,000 college scholarship.
