    School hours are 7:30-2:00

Where do I drop my child off/pick my child up?

Before/after school drop off/pick up is in the back parking lot

What if a student needs to be picked up during the school day?

Send a note with your child. The student should bring the note to Mary Lou Peilen or Joan Jackson in the main office before school starts.  Ms. Peilen or Ms Jackson will write a pass for your child to meet you in the main office at the appointed time.

Do students need a gym uniform for gym class?

No, simply send a change of clothes, such as a Tshirt and gym shorts, or sweatpants.  Also, students should have non-skid tennis shoes.  Lockers and locks are provided in the gym area for student use.

How do I know when my child eats lunch?

First lunch is before 4th period (10:15-10:40).  Second lunch is after 4th period (11:15-11:40).  The student’s lunch should be printed on his/her schedule.

How does my child get involved in after school sports/activities?

Sports sign ups for each season (fall, winter, spring) are available in the office and in the lunchroom the week before the sports tryouts start.  Tryouts and practices are generally from 2:00-3:30.  Transportation from school to home (after tryouts/practice/games) is not provided.

There are also a variety of after school activities (e.g., drama club, speech/debate, chess club, Chinese dance, math league) that students can join.  The process for joining these clubs is announced on the daily announcements prior to the sign up period.

How can my student get involved in school clubs that meet during the school day?

Students should listen for announcements about clubs  such as student council, National Junior Honor Society, and WEB leadership program. Each club will advertise how to become involved.

Is there after school homework help?

Highland does have an after school program for students who meet ALC criteria.  These students can enroll in the after school program from 2:15-4:45 (Monday/Wednesday) for math and reading help.  Transportation home is provided.  Your child’s homeroom teacher or school counselor would have registration information.

My child is talking about being on a “team” (e.g., Eagles, Jets) in school. What does that mean?

Highland Park Junior High has all of our students on an interdisciplinary team.  This means that four core teachers (English, humanities, science and math) share a group of about 150 students.  Core teachers plan their curriculum together so that the teachers know what their students are learning in the other subject areas.  Students are “off-team” (i.e., mixed in with the other students in the building) for their World Language class and their trimester electives.

How do I monitor my child’s academic progress?

Parents can sign up for Parent Portal, an online program which allows you to check your student’s assignments, grades, attendance, lunch account and library account.  For more information contact your child’s school counselor or our tech support person, Lisa Czech.

What if I have concerns about my child’s grades or adjustment to school?

Checking grades on Parent Portal with your child provides for an excellent chance to see how she or he is performing in school.  If you have concerns, contact the student’s teacher or the school counselor.  From there, you should be included as a team member in a problem solving approach to help your student get back on a successful path.
